About Western Institutional Review Board (WIRB)

The Western Institutional Review Board (WIRB) began in 1968 to provide human subject protection for endocrinology research conducted by Dr. Angela Bowen. We were the first independent review board, and since then we have continued to lead the field of independent ethical review of human research.

Over the years we have grown and expanded our services to meet the changing needs of the global research community. Today, WIRB provides review services for more than 400 organizations (academic centers, hospitals, networks, and in-house biotech research), as well as individual investigators, in all 50 states and around the world.
